A Graphic Description.— The following description of the Yosanitc Canon in Califor, ;.ia, a remarkable valley’ o'- chasm, which ig a'placc of resort ti all travellers, is from aq interesting and valuable work on California recently published, entitled the “'New West :—The driver of the conveyance thus tdks to his passengers as they approach the “ point of view,” where the wonder of the scene first hurst upon the vision of the passengers —“ Xowe, there’s no use talkin’(a fav rite phrase of his). I’ve taken a great many gimts and ladies to that ’ere pint vve’r* a cornin'.'to—luspirashiu Pint, they call it—and seed ’em jist pop right over ! There was Mrs Van Ardle, as strong a female as you ever see ; when I sho v’d her that, she jist caved right in ; and Mrs Smith, the minit she peerel over, she gin oute. And I’vc seen gentlemen’s hair stand right on ceud i’* “But what causes them to faint ?” said some one. “ I'm sure I don’t know. But I dew know’ y r e look right downe a sheer presipis, three-quarters of a mile deep, and across on t’other side, y r e see a wall of rock a risiu’ amost a mile high ; and downe below ye see a purty green valley with a river in the middle on it, a windin’ along ahoute eight mile above, and about twenty watqrd’alls. jist like silver, a jumpin’ over intq it ns ii they couldn't stop—some qn them fifteen hundred foot high ; and all along up mouutings and prespisses, from a mile to half-a-mile high, as sheer as a wall, and such purty colours on ’em, and all kinds of shadders. That's what's the matter! There’s no use talkin’ ! But we must he off—there’s that darn’d mule on the hack-trail agin!” We rode on a little distance through. 0 the thick forest, then, ou a word from the guide, farteued our horses to the trees, and made our
way tlirmigh the bush, with beating hearts, till we came out on the ledge of a precipice ; a few steps more and we were on a shelving rock, hanging over the gorge. “Inspiration Pointand," lying down, we were instructed to creep cautiously to the edge. There the whole mighty view opened upon us. 'J here was “no use talkin’,” indeed !
