[from our own correspondent.] Wellington, May 4. A fire broke out last night in Cuba street. Mr Light’s dwelling-house was totally destroyed, nothing being saved ; and Mr Bailie’s photographic establishment partially destroyed. A new house in the course of erection was partly burned. All the premises were insured. Christchurch, May 4th, 1.34 p.m. The nomination of three members for tho City took place to-day. The candidates are—Messrs H. W. Williams, A. Duncan (Mayor), H. Sawtell (of Cobb and Sawtell), John Inglis (Matheson’s Agency), M. B. Hart, and J. G. Hawkes. The poll takes place on Friday. The majority for Rolleston is now 946. Tokomairiro, May 4th, The annual grain and seed show was held to-day. There was a very poor display except in wheat. The champion cup was awarded to John Bryce of Lovell’s Flat. There were only two entries for oats, and no prize was awarded. A death up-country of a settler is reported, through being gored by a cow.
