The country returns are not in. Bluff, May Ist. AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY. Melbourne, April 25, The retrenchments in the Civil Service have commenced. Mr Michie was returned for Ballarat without opposition. Mr Porter’s tender for the first 56 miles of the North-Eastern Railway lapsed, as the deposit was not accepted. Lieutenant Ranter, of the Nelson, went home by the mail steamer for the purpose of bringing out the Cerberus. Reductions in the intercolonial rates of postage were announced to come into operation on the Ist May. Commercial. —Flour is in nominal demand, atLll 5s for trade transactions. Wheat is wanted; New Zealand is at 4s 7|d, and Victorian at ss. Maize is scarce at 4s to 4s 2d. Oats are offering freely at 3s 2d. Cornsacks are firm at 10s 6d. Sugars are moving ; low counters are quoted at L 32 10s. In teas, medium to fine congous have been placed at Is 6|d to Is B£d. Candles are firm at lOfd. Uevoe’s kerosene is quoted at 2s 7|d. New Zealand pine, assorted, is at 9s 3d to 9,8 9d. The proposed railway loan for New South Wales has been withdrawn, after discussion
Mr Parkes’s motion for conferring a pension upon the widow of the late Mr Plunkett was negatived. At Bathurst, a man named James Wakefield has been sentenced to death for the murder of a shepherd near Mudgee. The wife of Alderman Davies of Rockhampton was found dead. Her husband, on being arrested On a charge of murdering her, confessed the crime. He has been committed for trial.
