Tub Premier.— We are authorised to state that the Honorable Mr Fox, in compliance with a request by several friends of temperance, has consented to give an address on that subject on his return from Oamaru. Whales at the Port,— From a telegram from Port Chalmers, we learn that two whales were seen off the Tairoa Heads yesterday. Committal. — A Chinaman named Muk Kura has been committed for trial byR, Beetham, Esq., R.M., Cardrona, for selling spurious gold. Cromwell Reefs. —We learn by telegram that Mr W. J. Barry, yesterday, sold at Cromwell the late Mr Garrett’s interests in the Cromwell and Bendigo Gully Company, and in the Golden Link Claim,

Bendigo Gully. The fourth share in the first mentioned company’s leases sold for L2OOO ; and the fifth share in the Golden Link Claim fetched L7OO. The interests were purchased by the two companies interested. The Princess Theatre. The Christy’s Minstrels continue to attract good houses, and to deserve them. Last night their performance was equal to anything yet given, and we trust they will find it their interest to continue their entertainments longer than they propose.

Concert. —The complimentary benefit by the Colored Opera Troupe to the representative volunteers, came olf list evening at the Lunatic Asylum. Tire attendance of the public was not, we are sorry to say, so large as the occasion or _ the character of the performances merited. Lieut. Col. Harrington, Captain and Adjutant Atkinson, and enptams of other companies, were present. the programme presented, comprised an average number of solos and ohorouses, dhe troupe, which numbers eighteen performers, includes some very good voices, and contains some capital instrumentalists. Last night’s performances, on the whole, showed a marked improvement on previous performances ; and we see no reason why the troupe should not enter upon an enlarged sphere of operations. Of the solos, “We meet again” and Jenny Gray” were the best efforts. The gentleman who sang the last mentioned song was much applauded, and we only regretted that his name did not again appear on the programme. “ Will-o’-the-Wisp ” was encored, and a comic song afterwards given. The choruses were all well given, especially those in “ Come where my love lies dreaming” and “We meet again." There is one fault to our thinking which should be remedied. When the pianissimo passages are given, it would he well that the instrumental accompaniment, if given at all, should be subdued so that the voices may be properly heard. The gem of the concert was undoubtedly the solo on the English concertina, The selections that were given from “Norma” were admirably played, and in answer to a well-deserved encore, elections from “La Sonnambula,” with equal effect. The troupe is very fortunate in possessing such an excellent “hones;” and it is to that worthy’s credit that his jokes have the merit of being new, and many original. Nor must we- omit to mention of the burlesques on tragedy, which were productive of much laughter. We are sure the visitors must have been pleased with the entertainment provided for them, and the troupe is to be complimented on the success it achieved.
