THE COLONIAL PRIZE FIRING.

Yesterday. There was a delightful change in the weather yesterday, and it had the effect of bringing a large number of visitors to the ground in the afternoon. Amongst those who arrived early, were the Premfer, the Superintendent, the under Secretary for Defence, and subsequently the Mayor and many members of the Provincial Council. Firing commenced this morning shortly after ten o’clock. The following was the match:— Third set of prizes.—At ranges of 400, 500, and 600 yards, seven shots at each range. Maximum points 84. As will be seen from from the scores, the shooting was on the whole very good, and great interest was taken in it. Corporal Tressider, of No. 1 Company City Guards, is the winner of the first prize, L4O, and the N. R. Association’s medal ; Sergeant Gully, of Nelson, the second, L3O, and a silver medal; and Volunteer Batham, Wellington, third, L2O, and a silver medal. As on the previous day, the parties were divided into squads, under the command of Captain Stewart, Lieut. Andrew, and Captains Jones, and Copeland respectively. The scores are appended

At three o’clock, when the match was concluded, an adjournment took place for lunch, which was laid out in the schoolroom. A number of visitors sat down to a capital spread, provided by Mr Collins, of the White Horse Hotel. In the interval the tiring for cadit prizes was gone on with. The range was 201) yards, live shots each ; no prize unless 13 points were obtained. Of the nine competitors, only one, a youth from Canterbury, obtained the necessary number of points. A protest was, however, lodged against him, on the ground that he was over 17 years of age, and it is thought it will be allowed. A little before four o’clock the rapidity match was commenced at the first range of 300 yards. Some twelve men fired before the day’s proceedings came to an end, and some very good scores were made.
