ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

The Council of the Acclimatisation Society met at the Athcnmum this afternoon. Present : Messrs Murison (in the chair), Eccles and Oliver.

It was resolved, that if it be found that Mr Ewen has expended the L6O pounds in his hands, and the further sum of Ll5O he was authorised to draw upon the Society for, the sub-committee appointed at the last meeting of the Council, he impowered to expend another sum of L2OO in the purchase and introduction of stock, in addition to the LI4O authorised by the last meeting. A letter was received from Mr W. H. Clayton, Colonial architect, in reply to an opinion, expressed at a meeting of the Society, that black birch is a useless timber. Mr Clayton states that the specification for furniture for the Government House, provides that the dining-room furniture is to be made of black birch, and the drawing-room furniture of hinan, of which Mr Ban has speciments. It was recommended by Mr William James, a manufacturer of furniture. It was resolved—“ That the thanks of the Council be given to the Colonial Architect for his communication, and that he be requested to supply the botanical name of the toee designated black birch, and a twig with leaves and flowers, or fruit of the species of tree from which the wood was forwarded as a sample to Dunedin, the same with regard to Hinau.”

Resolved that the sum of LlO be presented to the Captain of the Warrior Queen, and L 5 to Mr Taylor, chieff officer of that vessel, in recognition of their services in connection with the importation of stock.
