Passengers—For Hokitika, Mrs and Master Harvey, Miss Rannon, Mrs Hamer, Mr Marsh, Captain Rich, and 14 in the steerage. Melbourne, April 21. Business is dull, owing to the holidays. Flour, at auction, realised Lll 7s 6d ; "Victorian wheat, 4s lOd to 5s Id ; New Zealand wheat, from 4s 6d to 4s 9d ; oats, 3s Id to 3s 3d ; maize wanted at 4s 3d; barley (feeding), 3s 5 d—malting, 4s 8d ; hops, Is 114 d ; Neva candles, lid; kerosene (Oriental), 2s 9d ; Henessy’s case brandy, 26s 3d ; wool, supply small—prices maintained ; sugars quiet—later arrivals checked speculation; Tasmanian jams are in demand. Seven of the Ministers have been re-elected without opposition. Mr Miclue stands for Ballarat West. His return is considered certain, Mr Macpherson has made a satisfactory explanation of his reasons for joining the Ministry. Mr Grant has expressed his willingness to accept the long-promised testimonial. Mr -J. H. Blackwood has been elected President of the Chamber of Commerce. Lewis Montgomery, of Sandhurst has been arrested on a charge of passing valueless cheques, Mr Charles Matthews is drawing crowded houses at advanced prices. The Victoria Insurance Company has declared a dividend of two pounds per shai’e. An eight houi’S demonstration was made to-day by a procession and fete at the Zoological Gardens. Nichols won the championship at the Yarra regatta. The Colonial Bank has declared a dividend of eight per cent. ... The wreck of the Lightning was blown up to-day in Geelong Harbor. Gale has made balloon ascents at Geelong. The Ultra-Liberal party held a pxxblic meeting at Collingwood, and passed
resolutions accusing the Ministry with strangling democracy. The Rangitoto arrived on the 18th. Incessant rains rendered the Volunteer encampment at You Yangs a total failure. The encampment was prematurely broken up on Sunday last. It is rumored that Captain Fellows relieves Commodore Lambert on the Australian Station. Sydney. Partisan and Lady of the Lake have been scratched for the Leger. A four-mile walking match has been arranged between Topley and Baker for L\oo. The latter gets 300 yards start. The Sydney Maxine Insurance Company has declared no dividend. The Council rejected the Divorce Bill. Wool is higher, especially greasy and sheepskins. General business is quiet. The discovery of a copper mine at Bomballa is reported. There is a large number of persons unemployed. Soup kitchens have been established. Large arrivals of sugars and teas. The English pedestrians, except Topley, have been beaten. Arrived—Drebert from Otago. The Opera season commenced with thin houses. Sugars at auction—Medium white crystals, L37to L4l 12s Bd. Adelaide, Captain Douglass has been appointed Government resident at the Northern Territory. Wheat is film at 5s 3d. The elections generally have been unfavorable to the Ministry, Heller is drawing crowded houses.
