Hokitika, April 11. The s. s. Tararua, Captain Hagley, arrived here from Melbourne on Saturday, at 3 p.m., after a passage of 4 days 22 hours. She left Sandridge pier at 3.31) p.m. on the 4th, and cleared the Heads at 6.15 p.m. the same day. During the lirst three days she experienced light easterly breezes, and during the remainder of the passage strong westerly
winds and thick weather. In consequence of the bad weather, she was not tendered here till this (Monday) afternoon. She brings 19 cabin and 65 steerage passengers, and 176 tons of cargo for all ports. Passenger List. —Mr and Mrs H. Sewell, Mrs Dodson, Miss E. Dodson, Misss F. Dodson, Miss E. Hackett, Miss Usher, Mr and Mrs Ulph, Messrs James, Dodson (2), Wade, M. Davis, Woodridge, Johnstone, Charles Wright, J. E. Kapp, Bridges ; and 65 in the steerage. Melbourne, April 4. Mr Charles Mathews was entertained at dinner at the Athenaeum. He made a characteristic speech. Mr M‘Gregor moved a vote of want of confidence in the Macphcrson Ministry last Tuesday. It was carried by a majority of 11, and the Ministry resigned in consequence. Mr M‘Gregor is endeavoring to form a new Ministry, and MrM'Culloch has promised to co-operate with him. The Easter Volunteer Encampment takes place at Little River. The Warrenheip Distillery Company meditate winding up, the loss on the operations of the Company during the last sfx mouths being L 3400. The Somersetshire has arrived. Mr Justice Chapman and Mrs Chapman are passengers by her. Mr John Chatfield Tyler has been appointed Assistant Commissioner of Customs. A fire was discovered in the fore-hatch of the Claud Hamilton while steaming up the bay on the 2nd, but it was extinguished by the pumps. The cause is supposed to be the spontaneous combustion of wool or flax. Commercial. —Flour Lll 10s ; wheat, os ; oats, 3s 4d to 3s 8d ; maize, 4s to 4s 2d. Sugars remain at former quotations, but the recent arrivals will, it is expected, cause a reduction. Teas are enquired for. Halfchests of good and medium have fetched Is 3,pl in bond. Malt is at 9s to 9s 3d ; hops at Is lOd ; and kerosene at 2s 2d. Little wool is offering. Greasy has fetched 4jd to 7d ; scoured, 7d to Is 3d ; fleece, 9.1 d to Is 2pi; sheepskins, green, 3s ; and dry, 3d to 5d per lb. Sydney.
Heavy rains have fallen at Morpeth and Paterson, and floods have taken place at Tam worth and Duhbo. The Richmond river district is also flooded. Nearly all the corn growing on the banks of the left arm of the river has been destroyed, and 2000 cattle have been drowned at Dungarrabba. A ship’s round-house, painted red, has been seen iu Jervis Bay. Large arrivals of sugars have taken place. The wool sales are brisk. Adelaide. The Governor intends visiting the neighboring colonies shortly. The elections are still going on. They have so far resulted iu favor of protectionist candidates. AMERICAN NEWS. News from America, to January 26th, is to hand, via San Francisco and Sydney. The first steamer of the Darien Canal expedition has sailed, and the rest of the fleet were to follow soon. The subscriptions towards the Stanton Retiring Fund amount to 100,000 dols. News received from Washington states that Congress is expected to be adjourned about the Ist May. A great fire has occurred at Indinnopolis. The damage done amounted to 300,000 dols. The Opera Hall, among other places, was destroyed. Rains have fallen very generally throughout California, and there is every prospect that next season’s harvest will bo the fines'; ever gathered in that State. Information has been received at San Francisco, that Mr T. M. Stanton, the late War Secretary, is dead. Une of the national banks, the capital of which is only 2,000,0Q0d015, issued cheques to the amount of 40,000,000d0}s iji one day during the late gold panic. The vessels loading at San Francisco for the colonies were the Sparking Dew, and another, flic name of which is not known. Freights were low, and a large amount of tonnage dis ngaged.
