The Maori landed her passengers, part cargo and 300 sheep at Port. She then steamed alongside the Queen Bee, and discharged 50 tons of tallow. From thence she sailed for Dunedin.
The Alice schooner, from Dunedin to Waikouaiti, anchored in the bay. The barque Duke of Edinburgh, for Newcastle, in ballast, is to sail this evening. The Wellington and Airedale were to have left Wellington for the South yesterday, but owing to the suspension of telegraphic communication, no indication of their movements can be obtained. We believe that this trip of the Wellington will be her last under her present owners.
The Golden Crown is the name of a fine new steamship in the course of construction at the yards of Messrs Duthie and Ross, Custom-Louse street, Auckland, for a number of merchants, who propose placing her on the Thames and Auckland passenger trade. The Golden Crown will be the finest and fastest paddle-wheel steamboat in these waters, exceeding in speed even the steamer Luna, recently on this trade. The machinery of the vessel is being imported expressly to the order of the owners from Glasgow, and, combined with the light draft of the vessel’s build, will enable her to make the passage between the Thames and Auckland considerably under three hours and a half. The schooner Jane Ann, Captain Smith, from Dunedin, arrived in the roadstead on Sunday, and was brought in yesterday by the ps. Dispatch. It is so seldom nowadays that a sailing craft makes the trip south-about that the fact is worth mentioning that the Jane Ann did so this time, the run occupying ten days. From the West Cape she had strong S.W, breezes, with rain and hail, which brought her to the offing, as above.—Grey River Argus, sth inst.
The schooner Excelsior, Archibald Bell, master, from Dunedin, arrived at Westport on Sunday. She cleared Otago Heads on the morning of the 25th ult., encountered light, baffling winds until passing the Bluff cn tbo 28th; made the South-west Cape on the 30. hj, with dirty south-westerly weather, attended with heavy squalls ; got off Bald Head on the morning of the Ist inst. ; hove to 12 hours, and the weather moderating, bore away for the Buffer, and anchored off the port on Saturday, at 4.30 p.ra.— 1 Vestport Times, 4th inst.
