The barque Union bound for Lyttelton, remains at an anchorage inside the Heads. The schooner Dunedin beat up to town this afternoon.
The Ahuriri, from Northern ports, arrived in port this morning at 6.15 a.m. Left Auckland on the Ist instant; Wellington on the Bth, and Lyttelton yesterday at 12.15 p.m. She proceeded to town at full tide. The steamer Williams intended for the Thames trade, in place of the Luna, which has been purchased by the General Govesnment, arrived at Auckland from Sydney on the 22nd instant. She is of 200 tons register ; and is said to be able to steam at the rate of 13 knots per hour. The Went Coast Times of April 2 says : We regret to report the stranding of the brigantine Prosperity yesterday on a sandbank some little distance from the north beach and near the entrance to the river. The Prosperity had arrived from Melbourne on the previous day, and yesterday the s.s. Lioness proceeded to the roadstead to tow her inside. The vessel’s anchor was lifted, and the tug in due course proceeded to the entrance with her charge. During the morning a strong S.W. wind was blowing, and the steamer evidently made every allowance for that circumstance, as she steered well in with the South Spit, and it was thought would bring in her charge cleverly, but just as she got clear of the outer break, the brigantine was observed to take a broad sheer to the northward, and, notwithstanding all efforts of the tug, the brigantine continued to drift, and at last shot away to the northward at a great rate of speed, dragging the steamboat with her. It had been known that there was a strong northerly set, and allowance was made for it, but the strength os the current had been under-rated. The vessel finally took the ground on the shingle bank already described, and finding that he had no command over the vessel, Captain Wilson directed all his energies to saving the tug-boat from a similar fate, as she also was in peril of taking the bank, and, in fact, would have done so but for the prompt and seamanlike measures taken. At low water as much as possible of her cargo was taken out and landed on the beach in boats. The vessel so far has not suffered the slightest injury. The same paper, of April 4, says The Prosperity was hauled off the hummock abreast of the north beach on Saturday, about 10 p.m., and the Lioness dropping down shortly afterwards, she was towed up to the wharf.
