but as if no language were too strong to ven their spleen or glut their wrath, their words were “ drawn swords;” and the two puncipal gladiators seemed to vie with each otln r who would thrust the hardest and wound the deepest a fallen brother, as contrasted with the moderate and Christian spirit in which the elders on the same side sp'-ke, these two ministers are worthy of the reprobation of all gone! men We have seen many exciting discussions in Church Courts, but anything so unseemly, nay so horrible, in its animus and design as the display made by these two “leaders” we never witnessed. The decision which the Presbytery anived at is not wonderful after listening to the venomous harangues to which we have alluded. But if ever the Presbyterian Church is to possess the confidence and command the respect of her members, a nobler spirit and wiser councils must prevail in her Presbyteries than have been exhibited by the Presbytery of Dunedin. Never until now, even in the palmy days of Moderatism, had we such occasion to blush for the Presbyterianism we love so well. Law and justice, scripture and common sense, have all been outraged by a despotic majority ; some of them may yet live to discover their mistake. It is time that the members of the Church should bestir themselves ere matters proceed too far in the wrong direction, A power has arisen within the Church greater than the Church itself. It has already operated mischievously in individual interests ; it has caused the withdrawal from our Province of some ministers fitted by their character and attainments to adorn any Church ; and now this lawless power begins to play fast and loose with the people’s rights, ami may soon produce disorganisation and disaster to many congregations throughout our borders, (Signed) JOHN PATERSON" JAMES P. The satisfactory results which have attended the operations of “ The New Zealand Building and Mutual Investment Society,” during the past six years, have raised the shares to such a value that non-shareholders have experienced great difficulty in obtaining advances upon terms beneficial to themselves. The Provisional Directors have therefore considered that the present time is an exceedingly favorable one for starting a new Society, upon the same principles as have hitherto proved so successful in the working of the present one. The experience gained during the existence of the parent Society, and the recent legislative enactments on the subject, justify the Directors in fixing the Shares at L6O, and making advances upon the security of the Shares of Members, provision for which will be made in the Rules. Prospectuses and Forms of Application for Shares, can be obtained of W. ORAM BALL, Princes street. HEAP PRINTINGf, Circulars, Cards, &c. “EVENING STAR" OFFICE.
