The s s. *Raugitoto left Hobson’s Bay at 2.50 pm. on the 2Sth March; passed through the Heads at 5.25 p.m. the same day, and Swan Island at 6 p.m. the following day ; experienced moderate winds froln the N.E. during the first day; afterwards light S.W. winds with fine weather until making the Solauders, when it came on a heavy gale from the N.W., with thick weather and rain ; passed the Solauders at G. 55 a.m. on the 2nd inst., and arrived in Bluff Harbor at 12.50 p.m. to-day. Passengers for Dunedin.—Cabin : Miss Wishart, Miss Reilly, Messrs Henry Tonks, Donald M‘Masters, Barn tt, Rev. L. Caldwell, Mrs Caldwell, Hon. H. Corry, Mrs J, E. Garbutt, Mr Fitzgerald; and 24 in the steerage. Melbourne, March 28. Commercial affairs are brisk. Confidence is restored Country orders frequent. Mr Camming has been elected for the South-Western Province, and Mr Duncan Gillies for Maryborough. At the Ballarat Sports on Saturday Hewitt and Bird were defeated. The Alfred Dock strike is continued. The Committee of the Eight Hours League censure the workmen. Captain Payne’s appointment as Chief Harbor Master has given great dissatisfaction. The honor of knighthood has been conferred on Mr James M'Culloch. The Tararua arrived on the 28th March. Sydsev, 28th March. Wool brisk. Greasy, 7d ; scoured, Is 6d. A new city omnibus company is proposed. A severe flood took place at Braid wood by ■which one life was lost. The Autumn Meeting betting is increasing. For the St. Leger Barbarian is favorite at three to one ; Lamplighter, four to one. Moselle, seven to two for the Cup ; the Earl, eight to one. In the Queen versus M'Kinlay all the convictions for conspiracy have been maintained. The Floods Relief Committee have decided to spend LG,OOO in relieving distress. The Wonga Wonga sails -to-day for Honolulu, with seventy-two cabin and sixty-four steerage passengers. The rowing match between Hickey and Rush, [for L2OO, was Avon easily by the former.
The rains have ceased, and the floods have subsided. Adelaide, Wheat, 5s 2‘d. At auction sales, the sugars ex Elderslie brought full rates. Arrived.—Flying Cloud, from Mauritius. Clyde, Saturday, At Drybread, Greenbank and party (five) for a five months washing got 430 ounces, and Read’s party 200 ounces.
