With some Councillors the proposal found favor; while others thought jt would be much better to send to Australia. or even to Lnglaud, v here a much superior article could be obta ned, and at. a much smaller price. It was stated by Mr Gnffeu that the Catholic bell cost L 95, landed in Dune.iin ; aud it was fwither stated that a bell would cost about the same sum if cast in Melbourne. Mr Jack threw out a good suggestion, that it would be better to have two small bells, and divide the city into districts ; and advised that they should be cast in Australia. After considerable discussion, it was resolved to call for tenders in Dunedin for the manufacture of a bell, weighing 4 cwt. ; the lowest tender to be accepted.
