WASTE LANDS BOARD.
The weekly meeting of the Board was held on Tuesday. There were present—The Chief Commissioner, Messrs Reid, Duncan, and Hughes. The following business was transacted :
Mr Shaw applied to be allowed to divert the Mcggatt Creek on section 32, block 2, Maungatua, for 'the purpose of increasing power of a llax mill water wheel. Mr Shaw to be informed that the Board had no power to grant the application. Mr M. S. Gleeson applied for a license to cut llax on section 20, block 10, Otepopo, Application granted without exclusive right. A similar application was made by 11. Watson and Sons in respect of waste lands in the Otepopo district ; and by C. G. Moore in respect of unsold land at Oamaru. In both instances permission was granted without exclusive right. Messrs Connell and Moodie applied on behalf of James Logan to have the Chief Commissioner’s decision in regard to application 762 reversed, and that Mr Logan be allowed to purchase the property, The Board upheld the decision of the Chief Commissioner. —The same firm applied on behalf of W. Duke aud R. Blackwood for a lease of block 6, Oamaru district. A fourteen years’ lease was granted at ia rental of L 5 per annum, the riglit to take stone being reserved to the Government.—An application was made by the same linn on behalf of W. Munro to purchase twenty acres of run 243. Granted; survey to be made at applicant’s expense.— The same firm applied on behalf of James Little, Maorewhenna, for a lease of eighty acres adjoining Arthur Smith’s application, block 5, Mucrcwhonua district. Lease granted for seven years, at an annual rental of LlO, to bo paid in seven days ; and land to be surveyed at applicant's expense wdthin three months.—The same firm applied, on behalf of Mr Little, for a lease of section 20, block 9, Otepopo, reserving to the Government the right to quarry. Referred to Road Department to report upon. In respect to Messrs Wilson, Bowling, and others’ application for a saw-mill license and to occupy land in Tuapeka west district, the alteration of names was agreed to, Me-srs Gillies and Street complained that Mr R. Johnston was depasturing 1040 sheep on the Awamoko Hundred without a license. It was ordered that Messrs Gillies and Street be informed that Mr Johnston had returned 647 sheep, and held a depasturing license. The opinion of the Provincial Solicitor upon the case of John Woods, who applied to have his deposit money on an application to purchase section 12, block 6, Wyndham, returned, because the survey had not been made within the specified time, was read. Resolved to recommend the return of the deposit money. The Road and Works Department reported on James Bee’s application to have section 5, blpek 55, Oamaru, put up for sale. Application granted. William Cleeland applied for permission to prospect for coal on section 6§, block 10, Dunedin and East Taieri. Granted. Robert Craig applied for permission to dress flax on unsold land in the Tuapeka district. Granted on the usual terms. Grant and Co.’s application to cut fiax on unsold lauds in the North Harbor and Blueskin district was granted. Memorandum from the .Superintendent in reference to G. Morrison’s application for certain sections in Lawrence; resolved to agree to applicant’s memorial as sanctioned by the Executive. Mr Charles Reid applied on behalf of Duncan Stewart, to purchase a reserve of 39 acres adjoining section 2S, block 11, Dunedin and East Taieri. Resolved that the land be sold as land of special value, at 21s per acre. The Chief Commissioner was authorised to grant permission to cut llax, without exclusive rights, without referring applications to the Board.
