MAYOR'S COURT.
•Tins Day. (Before his Worship the Mayor, Driver, ami M. S. Gleesou, Estjs., J. P.’s.) DRUNKENNESS. Robert vSherar, and Robert M‘Bride, were eacli lincU HO.s., or in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. John Gately, being an old offender, was seat to gaol for seven days. William Meldrurn was charged with drunkenness, and assaulting the police while in the execution of their duty. From the evidence of Constable Hanlon it appeared that he had been ca'lcd upon to arrest the prisoner because he had been threatening his wife. On his attempting to do so, the prisoner turned upon him, and committed the assault complained of. He was very violent, and he had to be carried to the lock-up. He was lined L2O, or in default, three months’ imprisonment. William Fawkner and James Rutherford were charged with conducting themselves in a disorderly manner in Princes street. Fawkner was. fined 20s, and Rutherford 40s, or three days’ imprisonment. THROWING TOBACCO TO THE -MAORI PRISONERS. Thomas Aitken was. charged with this offence. According to the statement of Overseer Ontram, at 11-31) a.m. yesterday, he observed a piece of tobacco thrown to one of the Maoris while at work. The prisoner and another man were close by. The Maori, who received the tobacco, stated in evidence that it was the prisoner who threw it. Prisoner said he was drunk at the time, and know nothing about the matter. He was a stranger here, having just come from Upper Waipori, where ho had been living for six years. He was fined L 5, with the alternative of 14 days’ imprisonment. OBSCENE LANGUAGE. Catherine Mason was charged with this offence. The evidence of two constable i was most conclusive. She was fined LlO, or, in default, three months’ imprisonment; the sentence to he accumulative upon that received a short time since. MINOR OFFENCE. A charge of allowing cattle to stray, preferred against John Grant was dismissed. Walter Anderson for a similar offence was fined 5s and costs. INFORMATIONS BY THE INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES. Lewis Lewo, for allowing impure water to flow on to the footpath in Hanover street was fined 5s and costs. Just before the rising of the Court the sureties of Catherine Mason in respect to the appeal now pending, surrendered their recognisances, which were accepted. The prisoner also snrrenderedjjj and was re-committed to gaol.
