TOKOMAIRIRO RACES.
(From the Bruce Standard.) The following are the results of the two days races : Maiden Plate.—3o sovs., distance one and a-half mile. Entrance, L2 ; weight for age. Mr R. Cotton’s b m Fairy Queen, 6 yrs, 10st 11b (Laverty) ... ... ... 1 Mr A. Pillans’s ch m Queen Bee, aged, lOst lib (Kelso) ... ... ... 2 Mr W. D, Barnard’s ch g Mormon, aged, lOst 11b (Reay) ... ... ... 3 Mr G. Coombe’s b m Fairy, 5 yrs. 9st 11b (Goodman) ... ... ... 0 This was but an indifferent race, the pace being slow. Mormon kept the lead until passing the post the first time, closely followed by Queen Bee. The three kept well together, with Fairy pursuing hopelessly until near home, when Fairy Queen came alongside Mormon, and in the straight passed by almost six lengths, which position was easily maintained until past the winning post. District Handicap. —7o sovs, distance, one and a-half mile. Mr Pollock’s ch m Lady Ellen, 7st 101b (Cotton) ~, ... ... ••• 1 Mr Delamaina’s ch m Atalanta, aged, Bst 121b. (Thorpe) ... ... ... 2 Capt. The start in this race was, as we have stated, awkward, five of the horses getting considerably ahead of the others. Before they reached the stand, however, they were running pretty close, with Fairy Queen leading. Lady Ellen rushed up at the turn, and passed the ruck, Atalanta struggling to catch her. H-r Ladyship kept her position easily, despite the use of whip and spur on Atalanta, and the mare came in a winner by three lengths, with Miss King close on the heels of Atalanta. Time, 3 min, 2 sec.
Novel Race.—3o sovs, distance, one mile and a quarter. Weight for age. Entrance, LI 10s. Winner to be sold for L2O ; any surplus to go to race fund. Mr M'Farlane’s b m Beeswing, 5 years, 9st 111b (Laverty) ... ... ... 1 Mr Pollock sb m Young Lady of the Lake, 3 years, 7st 131b (Cotton) ... 2 Mr Langley’s b g Turpin, aged, lOst lib (Stanton) ... ... ••• 3 Mr Spooner’s g g Spider ... ... C Mr Cotton’s b m Fairy Queen (scratched). Beeswing was altogether the favorite, but Turpin looked dangerous. The mare was in tine form, while Turpin was not quite in racing condition. A good start was made, and Turpin led for a mile with Beeswing waiting. The latter sprang alongside, was never again headed, and came in front of Mr Capstick, three lengths in advance, Turpin and Young Lady of the Lake showed unmistakeablo symptoms pf punishment. Distance Handicap Trotting Race.—Bo sovs, distance three miles. Optional saddle or harness. Weight for age ; entrance, L2. Mr M'Farlane’s b g Major, aged, lOst 11b (475 yds) ... ... ... ... 1 Mr Pollock’s b g Ranger, aged, lOst 11b (scratch) ... ... •• 2 Mr Langley’s b g King, 3 yrs, 9st 111b (275 yds) ... ... ... ••• 3 Mr Williams’s Fattier ... (scratched) The three horses started well together, and no sooner had they reached the stand for the first round than it became evident the struggle would lie between the old Major and Banger. In the second turn Major showed symptoms of fatigue, but a slight application of the whip wakened him up, ami it was now doubtful if Ranger -would catch him in time. A fter a hard struggle on the part of Rauger, the victory lay with the veteran Major. Time, lOmin. ssee. Publicans’ Purse.—so sovs, distance two and a-half miles. Entrance, L 3; weight for age. Capt. Hutchison’s b g Wild Boy, 5 yrs, 9st 101b (Stan on) ... ... ... 1 Mr Pillana’s b hj Bedouin, 3 yrs, 7st 91b (Pearson) ... ... ... ... 2 Mr Barnard’s Foretop ... (scratched) Mr Delamaino’s Atalanfca) ... (scratched) The young colt came to grass in splendid
condition, and looked a dangerous rival to the JWild Boy. The latter with Dunstan honors, was the anticipated winner. The race was realy good, making the pace hot for Wild Boy. He had carefully to watch the game little colt, but on nearing the post Wild Boy responded to the call of his rider, and landed just two lengths in front. Time, 5 min. 32 secs. Second Day. Handicap Hurdle Race,—3o sovs, two and a-half miles ; over eight flights of hurdles. Entrance, LI 10s. Mr Gr. William’s b g Fireater, aged, 9st 71b. (O’Brien) ... 1 Mr A. Smith’s b g Chance, 6 yrs, 9st. ... 2 Mr Barnard’s Don Pedro, aged, lOst lib. 0 A good start was made, and all three came to the first hurdle nearly together, but Don Pedro refused the leap, the other two clearing it very cleverly. The Don was in an obstinate humor, and would not warm to his work The race lay between the other two, who kept well together for one round, when Fireater, benefiting by a mishap to the rider of Chance, who lost one of his stirrup irons, went ahead, and was never headed. Time, 6 minutes. Flying Handicap.—4o sovs ; distance, one mile. Mr Morton’s b g Atlas, 5 yrs, 7st 41b (Burns) ... ... ... ... 1 Mr Dalamaine’s b g Wild Boy, 9st 101b 2 Mr Moore’s ch m Waterwitch, sst 12lb 3 Mr Pollock's Raven, aged ... ... 0 Mr Pollock’s Lady Ellen, aged ... 0 A fair start was effected, Raven leading for some distance, but the lot was soon in a ruck. Atlas put on the steam, shot ahead, and came in an easy winner by three lengths. Time, Imin. 59sec. Selling Rage.—3o sovs; distance, 14 miles; entrance, LI 10s. Mr M'Farlane’s b m Beeswing ... 1 Capt. Hutchison’s Miss King ... ... 2 Mr Pillan’s Bedouin ... ... . , 3 Mr Barnard’s Mormon .. ... 0 Mr Cotton’s Tiny ... ... ... 0 Mr Coombe’a Fairy ... ... ... 0 Mr Pollock’s Raven ... ... ... 0 Mr Spooner’s Spider ... ... ... 0 This race from the first was between Miss King and Beeswing. Bedouin somehow did not seem in good trim for a struggle. Time, 3min 13sec. Tokomairiro Handicap.—loo sovs ; distance, 2 miles. Mr Delamaine’a Atalanta ... (Thorpe) 1 Mr Delamaine’s Wild Boy ... .. . 2 Mr Barnard’s Foretop ... ... 3 Capt. Hutchison’s Miss King ... ... 0 When the flag fell Miss King led the way for the others, and kept the lead for a round but Atalanta was all there when called upon, and for the last round he kept the front, coming in a winner by three lengths.
