GENERAL GOVERNMENT PRIZES.

To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sir, —The annual competition for the above-named pi’izes will take place sometime in April, Formerly the meeting was held at Wellington, the Empire City of New Zealand, but last year, on account of the unsettled state of things in the North Island, it was held in Dunedin. Now, Sir, my reason for writing on the above subject is simply this,—that at the last meeting in Wellington, the Dunedin men, with the representatives of the other Provinces, were treated in a most cordial and hearty manner; but how were the representatives treated in the great city of Dunedin last year ?—in the most miserable way possible. They were left to look after themselves, from the time they landed on the jetty till they took their departure therefrom, excepting, of course, during the firing and the dinner (?) which was given them in the Masonic Hall. Let me hope, Sir, that this letter will have the desired effect of rousing some of the military officials up (who may, perhaps, be able to work together, now that Colonel Cargill is out of the road) so that they will devise some proper means for entertaining our visitors at the greatest gathering of “Rifle Shots” ever held in the Southern hemisphere.—Yours, &c., . A. F.
