(from our own correspondent.) Invercargill, March I. A destructive tire took place in Dee street this morning, at one o’clock. Reese’s grocery store, Clarke’s hostelry and corn store, were totally destroyed j Stewart and Riddel’s wheelwright shop, was partially destroyed, Reese only is insured for LSOO in the Hew Zealand Office, but it does not cover his loss. At Talbot, on the 23rd ult., a man named Thomas Steedman shot his Avife dead, suspecting her fidelity. He brought her supposed paramour face to face Avith her. A struggle folloAved, during which the wife Avas shot through the head. It is supposed that the shot Avas intended for her paramour. Sydney, Feb. 23. The friends of the Hon, Mr Robertson, Avho resigned his seat OAving to embarrasment, intend nominating him again. Mr Wilson, the Opposition candidate, has been elected for East Sydney by a majority of 572 over Mr Campbell. Blairi, the Bank clerk, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for defrauding the Bank in Avhich he was employed. Langford, secretary to the Oddfellows, has been found guilty of embezzlement, and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. Herr Bandmann is making great successes. Adelaide, Feb. 23. The Governor, in his opening speech to the House, said he should grant a dissolution, as there had been four changes of Ministry in 18 months, none of which had the confidence of Parliament. Owing to the Government not asking for a Supply Bill, the salaries remain unpaid. Great dissatisfaction is expressed in consequence. A cargo of Mauritius sugar has been AvithdraAvn for higher prices. Wheat, 5s 2d fo 5s 3d. Tasmania, Feb. 23. A Civil Service Bill, similar to that of Victoria, is likely to be introduced next session.
