CHURCH OF ENGLAND SYNOD.
Yesterday. The Synod met at four o’clock yesterday. The Primate of New Zealand presided. Resolutions were proposed by the Rev. Mr Stanford, and Messrs Dewe, Ashcroft, and J. Smith, to provide for a travelling missionary clergyman, and for payment of passage money and maintenance of missionary clergymen. They were not supported, and were allowed to lapse. Mr James Smith introduced a motion for the establishment of Diocesan Courts for the purpose of investigating any charge against lay or clerical officers. The proposition was seconded by the Rev, Mr Gifford, and indirectly by the Rev. Mr Edwards. ’lt was opposed by Messrs R. B. Martin, Mr Watt, and the Rev. Mr Coffey, and negatived. On the motion of the Rev. Mr Edwards it was resolved that the Bishop do certify to the list of clergy in the diocese, in order that they may vote at the election of clerical representatives for the diocese in the Synod. Motions were adopted for providing for supplying ministers in the' diocese with copies of the report of the Standing Committee, and for introducing a Bill founded upon the report of the Select Committee for the election of Synodsmen. The Bill was Introduced and passed through all its stages with a few amendments. On the motion of the Rev. Mr Edwards, instructing the Standing Committee to take steps necessary to raise a special fund for introducing and maintaining missionary clergymen was carried. The Rev. Messrs Edwards, Stanford, Granger, Dasent, and Messrs Martin, Thomson, Hill, and Mason, were appointed a Standing Committee during the recess., The Synod adjourned to 4 o’clock.
