MAYOR'S COURT.

This Day. (Before T. Birch, Esq., R.M., and Ed if. M'Glasben, Esq., J.P.) DRUNKENNESS. A woman, styling herself Mrs Frederick’, was charged with this offence. It appeared that, despite the efforts of a constable to pre* vent it, she took a bath in one of the watercourses, and tried to stay in the water longer than was good for her health. She was sent to gaol for 48 hours, OBTAINING GOODS UNDER FALSE PRETENCES. George Smyth was chaiged with obtaining goods under false pretences, from Charles Johnson. On the 30th December, the prisoner went to the shop of Mr Johnson, draper, Maclaggaa street, and presenting an order purporting to be signed by one Frederick Eason obtained goods to tbe value of 10s sd. He also went to the shop of a grocer named Hastie, and on the strength of an order purporting to be signed by the same person, obtained goods to the value of 9s 4d. It was stated in evidence that the prisoner and Eaton had been fellow-workmen, and that on one occasion he had given the prisoner an order to get goods, but he never gave the orders presented in the present instances, both of which were forgeries. In extenuation, the prisoner urged that he had sent the money for the goods he got to the parties before he was arrested. Being his first offence, the Bench sentenced him to a month’s imprisonment, with hard labor. MINOR OFFENCE. James Campbell was charged with allowing the chimney of his house to take fire. The case was dismissed with a caution.
