CITY COUNCIL.

Tins Day. The Council met this afternoon. Present —Councillors Pish (in the chair), Carrol, M 'Clashan, Thoneman, Walter, Wilkinson, and Wilson. At the request of Councillor Walter, the following letter from the Gas Committee to Messrs Driver, Maclean, and Co, was read “ February sth. “ Gentlemen— Referring to your letter of date in the margin, and my reply under date 17th January, 1870, I have now the honor, by instructions from the Gas Committee of the City Council, to inform you that the Committee has fully considered your proposal, on behalf of Mr S. Hutchison, for the sale to the City Corporation of the lessee’s interest in the Dunedin Gas Co.’s works. The Committee cannot recommend the Council to ucgociate for the purchase of the lessee’s interest merely. With a desire, however, on their part to pursue negotiations further, they have the honor to request that you will be good enough to furnish them by Wednesday next, if possible, or as soon thereafter as may be convenient, with replies to the following queries : “ 1. Are you in a position to offer to the Corporation for a lump sum the whole of the Dunedin Gas Company’s works and plant, the lessee’s interest in the lease, and the whole of the shareholders’ interest and debenture holders’ interest ? “2. If unable to name a price for the debenture holders interest, can you name a juice for the remaining interests referred to in query No. 1. ‘■J. Can you inform the Committee the date upon {which the Gas Company’s debentures were issued, and whether such debentures are subject to the present lease to Mr Hutchison, or whether on the other hand the lease was not made without the concurrence of the debenture holders. “ I am, &c., J. Massey, “ Town Clerk. “ Messrs Driver, Maclean, &Co.” Messrs Driver, Maclean, and Co. wrote, in reply, that they had not been able to give the required information until the return to town of Mr Driver, who is now out of town. A letter was read from Mr G, E. Barton, on behalf of Mr Hannah, asking compensation for alleged damage to his client’s pro*

perty in consequence of the improvements in Pitt street, and threatening to commence an action forthwith in the event of no settlement being arrived at. Referred to Works Committee. Councillor Wilson was elected a member of the Market, Eire Brigade, and Works Committee. Councillor Carrol presented a petition from 13 residents in Grange street, praying that steps might he taken to improve the street. Referred to Works Committee. Councillor Walter gave notice of his intention to move at next meeting of the Council, That the Government be requested to place at the disposal of the City the old hospital morgue for a similar purpose. Pursuant to notice, Councillor Thonemax moved—That the City Surveyor he instructed to prepare at once plans and specifications for the effectual drainage of the low-lying land in Bell ward. Carried. The tender of Booker and Hcnwood for works in Pitt street, for L2lO Bs, was referrd to the Works Committee, with power to call for fresh tenders.
