The Victorian Sugar Company have advanced 20s per ton. Wool is very linn. Greasy, fid to 9|d; scoured, lOd to I3j{d ; fleece, Is to Is 4d. Devoe’s kerosene, 2s 2d. The New Zealand flax, ex Moa, realised at auction L 33 to L 34 10s per ton. Tho new Ministers have been sworn in, viz. :—Aspinal, Solicitor-General ; MM.ennan, Public Works ; Graham Perry, Treasurer. The election writs have been issued. An Opposition is rumored, but tho names have not transpired Arrived, Waterman, from Hokitika. Sailed, Zephyr, Charlotte Gladstone, for Lyttelton,
Kate Conley for Grcymonth, Mary for Auckland, and City of Melbourne steamer. Dr Cowio, the Bishop of Auckland, is a passenger. Tlie English mail arrived in Hobson’s Bay on the 20th. Charles Daloustel, the French teacher, was fully acquitted on a charge of criminal assault. The prosecutor’s story was entirely misbelieved. Mr Wa’dock’s canary jumped over a bar five feet ten inches high, at Kirk’s Bazaar, winning a bet of Ll2O. „ The Soul hern Insurance Coy. declared a ten per cent, dividend. Chinese lepers and leprosy are creating considerable public, uneasiness. ( harles J. Davb, a passenger per Yorkshire, chargt d with forgery, has been remanded to London. Mr Mopfiet’s filly “ My Dream ’ is dead. The London Navigation Board has reversed the certificate suspension decision of the Victorian Board in tho case of Captain Trnmble of the Explorer. _ Parliament is prorogued till tho 15th February. Mr Poole, proprietor of the Herald, contests the election for West Geelong against Mr G. Berry. Mr Holmes, solicitor, died suddenly in tho Bull and Mouth Hotel yesterday. Flour, at auction, has brought from LI 1 to Lll 12s 6d. New Zealand oats, 3s 9d. Stdkey. Camming* and Co., agent* for tho Atlantic and Pacific Mail Company hare sent * communication to the Government per Avoca, ottering to convoy tho mails from Sydney to England in forty day*, at LIOOO per trip. They state that if every arrangement is competed. they will engage to deliver the mails at Milford Haven in forty days, or forfeit LSO per day. First-class passengers, L6O ; second, L3O ; including railway fares. The proposed contract is for ten years, The Conference on the Postal Servisfl agreed to include a mail via Torres Straits, New Zealand to contribute a sum not exceeding L 15,000, and also to bear two-fifths of tho Cal fornian route subsity. A man named Prendergast and his wife were arrested at Brisbane, on suapioion of having murdered Patrick Harvey. The City Bank has declared 8 per cent, dividend. A public testimonial Is proposed to be presented to tho ex-Prcmior, Mr Robertson. It is supposed that C. S. Burtt, horse bazaar proprietor, has sailed for California in his own yacht, leaving L 30,000 worth of liabilities. . Margaret Boyce, a servant girl, was found drowned under suspicious circumstances. Sailed from Newcastle For Dunedin: Union and Bengal. Arrived—From Auckland : Island City, Guass, Pakeha. The Commercial Bank’s dividend and bonus amount to 174 P er cen^ Adelaidb.,, The South-eastern Bailway scheme has been accepted by Parliament. Captain Edgecombe, the Governor’s aide-de-camp has been promoted to the rank of Lieut.-Colnnel. Markets are quiet. Flour, Lll 15s to Ll2 10s. Wheat, 5s 2d, Christchurch, 12.10 p.m. News has been received of the arrival of the missing ship Matoaka at London. No particulars as yet.
