PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.

Tins Day. The Speaker took his seat this afternoon at the usual hour. Nothing of importance occurred, although there was some little sparring between Mr MTndoe and the Government. that gentleman giving notice of a motion, that, notwithstanding the resolutions that have passed the House, the Hundreds recommended by the Council last session be proclaimed. In answer to Mr MTndoe, the Secretary for Laud and Works said that no contract binding upon the Colony had been entered into for the construction of the sea wall at Kakanui. That, assuming contracts to be entered into on terms of the resolution of the Council, the conditions were inserted that payments should not be made until the 3rd December, 1870, and the 3rd September, 1871; but that a sum of money—L2,oo0— had been voted for the work, which would be carried to suspense account in anticipation of payment for the work done when the money fell due. Mr Green’s question as to the seeds sown on the Main North road, were Cape Brown, kangnow, acacia, and laburnum; that the seeds were supplied by Mr MTndoe; that they cost Ll7 10s. Mr MTndoe, in view of none of the young plants having appeared, announced that the seed wss very good, but that it required longer time to germinate than it had already had. The University of Otago Ordinance Amendment Bill was considered in committee, passed, and read a third time. Amongst other incidents of the afternoon, a message was presented from his Honor the Superintendent, laying before the Council the offer of Mr Arthur John Burns to proceed to Great Britain as Immigration Agent. The Mocraki Lands Sale Bill passed through committee, was read a third time

and passed. A rather animated debate took place on the proposition of Mr Thomson to set aside about 300 acres of land at Port Molyneux as a reserve. [Left sitting. ]
