EARLY CLOSING.

To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sir,—The ladies of Dunedin are entitled to the highest praise for the noble stand they invariably take in all works of mercy and charity. No enterprise is so sure of success as one patronised by the fair sex ; and, whilst this much is admitted it is only necessary to the evil of late shopping in order to its being at once remedied. lam quite sure that eight hours toil in any colony of the Southern Hemisphere is not only quite sufficient for one working class but for all others. If carpenters, masons, tailors, &c., find the period long enough for effective work not the less so must it be for drapers assistants. Will the ladies of Dunedin discountenance all shopping after six o’clock in the evening, and make their purchases as early as convenient during the day, and thus confer a boon on those who will only too gratefully appreciate it ? lam afraid we are not quite so far advanced as our compeers in Victoria, who are agitating for a Saturday half holiday, and have partially obtained it. That as yet only “looms in the distance nevertheless, I believe “ there is a good time coming ’’ even in this respect. Its advent may be hastened or retarded according to favor or disfavor with which it is viewed by the ladies, wives, mothers and daughters, of this fair City of Dunedin —I am, &c., Ax Early Bird. Dunedin, Dec. 21, 1869.
