Remarkable Escape.—The brig Ellen, which arrived from Newcastle on Sunday last (says the A' r/.s -on hXi'amiwr), encountered very heavy weather during her passage. During a strong gale'of wind a sea broke over the brig and earned away part of the vessel’s bulwarks, and swept overboard one of the seamen, who, remarkable to relate, was again washed on board, but with a broken arm. Death by Drowning in the Clutha.—The Cromwrll Cannikin of 16th inst, says:—-“A melancholy case of drowning took place in the Clutha Hiver yesterday afternoon, about G p.m. It appears that a young man named John Steel, aged 25, well known in this district, was in company with a mate named Embrus, engaged rafting down timber from Hawea Lake.
