The Theatre. — The Princess Theatre was not so well attended last evening as the quality of the entertainment do serve!. The i rama was “ The Will and the Way, in which there is quite sufficient of the horrible to suit the taste of the most sensation-seeking audience. It is a plot, exteu ling over years, and affords abundant room fir effective acting. Mr Raynor’s representation of Old Martin i s on the whole a superb picture, ami stamps him an act r of very high order. Tee remaining parts wore well sustained, undue mav especially mention MissCassy Mat,hews and Mr SimTlowaad as worthy of commendation. The whi i s’eal comcd’atta “ Rosiua followed, in which Miss Fordo was the hero ne, an I sang several songs with good taste. Mr Sam Howard had a part specially fitted for his genius, and was genuinely funny. The pieces will be repeated this evening, and we commend them to the notice of those who have not scan them, and to those who have as being very on joy.. It. o as rcjretitioiis.

Chamber oe Commerce. —At 1.30 to-dav, a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce waited upon his Honor the Super intendent, to urge up m him the advisability of offering a small siibfidy to steamers conveying the European mails betwe-n Melbourne and the Southern Provinces of New Zealand. The deputation consisted of Messrs Turnbull, Herbert, Driver, Brodriek, Butte; woith, and the Secretary, J. S. Webb. The deputation stat d that they had received a communication from Messrs Dalgety, Rat'.ray and Co., containing a proposition that the Government should subsidize steamers conveying the mails. Mr R. B. Martin was of opinion that something of the sort should be done, and urged that His Honor should send a message immediately to the Provincial Council, recommending that a small subsidy should be granted. He thought that by taking that step at once a telegram announcing the intention might roach the outgoing steamer before she reached the Bluff. His Honor did not think it advisable to send a message to that effect until a final decision was arrived at, which could not bo in time to save the steamer. He would not pledge himseff to carry out the propo-ition, for he thought that tiie three Provinces of Southland, Otago, and Canterbury, should join in the project. Mr Turnbull thought LIUl) should be paid by Southland. His Honor thought L4WO a trip would be sufficient for the three Provinces. He would submit the matter to the Provincial Council, but -would not pledge himself to any particular sum. The deputation thanked his Honor and withdrew.
