THE INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET MATCH.

The seventh Interprovincial cricket match commenced on the Southern Recreation Ground to-day. There was a strong northerly w ; nd blowing, which was anything but pleasant for playing. The ground was in very fair .condition, but compared with the Christchurch ground, it must have appeared rather dead to our visitors. The game commenced at twenty minutes past eleven o'clock. Haddock, captain of the Otago team, winning the toss took the held, Cotterill and Wood going to the wickets for Canterbury to face the bowling of Downes and Hendley. Wood received the first over, which consisted of four halls from Downes, which was a maiden. His example was followed by Hendley, who in his first ball, showed that he was “well on.” In Downes’ next over Wood tapped a ball between slip and cover-point for a a ngle. Headley’s next over was a maiden, but in Downes’ next, Cotterrill got a couple for a good hit to leg, and afterwards a single for a poke to the off. Cotterill next got a single off Hendley ; and in the next over from Downes he managed to get 2 for a hit to coverpoint. Hendley again bowled a maiden. In Downes' next Cotterill got a single for a hit to the on, but the smart return of the hall by M‘Donnell prevented him netting any more. Cotterill was clean bowled by Hendley, in h’s next ball, 1 wicket for 8. Allington then joined Wood. The latter then got a single off Downes, and off Hendley, three for a good hit to leg. The first ball Allington got he hit up, and it it was secured by Downes in the slips ; 2 wickets for 12. Odell next went to the wickets. Wood got a single fora hit to short leg off Downes ; hut in Hendley’s next over, he hit a ball high up to long leg. The wind caused the hall to hang ; and Alien, who had replaced Kettle at long leg, managed to secure it nicely ; 3 for 13, and the prospects of Canterbury looking decidedly bad. Eeade then joined Odell, and the latter immediately got 2 for a hit to mid-on, the bad being sharply fielded by J. C. Fu ton, Eeade next got a single for a tap to cover-point. The next ball from Downes was hit away to long leg by O.iell, and was bally fielded by Kettle ; the consequence being that three rims were got for it off Hemilcy’s first ball. In the next over, Odell got a single by a curious draw Hendley’s next was hit up by Ecade, but it fell into the hands of F. Fulton, who long-stopped, and was held by him ; 4 for 20. Fowler, the captain of the Canterbury team, next put in an appearance. Odell at once got a single for a tap to cover-point, and Fowler next got another single by putting

the ball to slip. A second run ought to have boon got for the hit, but Odell seemed disinclined to u-e his legs. Off of Hendley’s next over, Fowler made a capital hit to the the long off, right along the ground, and to the edge of the grass. He ought to have cot 5 for it, but only obtained 4, Odell again showing a strong disinclination to run. Odell again managed to draw Downes for a single. Downes next bowled a wide, the first given in the match. Hcndley followed with a maiden ; but nearly all his balls were pitched rather short. Off Downes’s next, Fowler got .1 for a good hit to square leg, which ho followed by a couple in the same direct ion, off Hendley. Odell next got a single off Downes ; and Hcndlcy’s fir-t ball he got away over to the pavilion for 3. Fowler also got a single off Hendley for a hit to mid-on. Downes’ next was a maiden ;as also was Hendley’s. Fowler next got a couple for a hit past short-leg, off Downes ; and he seemed to bo getting in for some play. Odell next got a single off Hcndley for a hit to leg, but on Downes’ next over he sent up a “ skyer,” which was secured by Hendley on the slips. 5 for 41. Dickenson succeeded him. The next ball bowled by Downes was sharply hit to point hy Fowler. Maddock tried to catch it, but the ball catching him on the thumb, flew into his face, giving him a very ugly blow on the light cheek. The blow, which might have had more serious effects, was sufficiently hard to necessitate a change in the field. Aden took Haddock’s place at point, the latter taking long-slip. H. W Cairns going from thence to square-leg, and J. C. Falcon taking long-leg. Play was then resumed, and Downei bowled another maiden. Fowler’s next was for a single for a tap to coviT-f oint off Downes. In Hendley’s next, he hit up a ball which was caught by F. Fulton. 6 for 4‘2. Walker was the next to go to the wickets, and immediately got a single for hit to leg. The ball was, however, quickly returned, and he just saved his wieket. Dickenseu next scored a single, and afterwards hit a ball from Downes down to the slips, which ought to have been scored by Maddock. Walker again got a single off Hendley, but it was a narrow escape, the ball being very smartly returned to Downes. In his next over Walker got a single for a hit to long-slip. Hendley, in his next over, bow ed his. first wide. In Downes’s next Dickenson hit a ball to the slips, which was pretty nearly caught by Maddock, and Dickenson obtained another single for a hit to log. The next hall he got from Hendley he managed to hit up, and it was nicely caught by Allen —seven for 49. Maples next made his appearance. Downes started his next over with a wide, and the second ball was put away to leg by Walker. It came down to Kettle, was again badly lidded by him, and two runs were got in consequence. Hendley followed with a maiden. Walker, in Downes’s next over, tried to put a ball away in the slips, but it was too smartly return, d by Maddock, and no runs could bo got from it; be, however, got 2 for a hit to leg off H -nd'ey. Maples next hit Downes to leg ; Kettle again fielded the ball bally, and Maples got a couple put down to his score when he should only have one. In Headley’s next Walker sent the ball_up, and the former secured it—eight for 57. Stevens came in next, and at once put the ball to cover-point for a single. The run. however, was just got, and that is-all. Hendley, in his next over, gave a wide, but no runs were got off him. Maples got 2 for a curious hit to leg, and Stevens obtained 3 for a fine hit down to the pavillion. Maples next sent up a “skyer” over Wills’s head at long on, and got a single for it. Steven’s struck at Downes’s second ball rather late, and lost bis wicket. 9 for 67. Pearce, a left-hand player, next came to the wicket. He got a single for a tap to longslip, and then lost his wicket by a capital ball from Hendley. The innings of Gauterbury thus terminated runs ; and it lasted two hours all but ten minutes. The fielding of the Otago team was on the whole very good. Collin-on was good behind the wickets, and F. Fulton was excellent at long-stop. Allen also fielded remarkably well, both at long-leg and point. Hendley was in capital form ; bis only fault being that he pitched many of his balls short. Downes, from the first, was off the wicket, and this is solely owing to want of practice. Could he but have come down a week earlier we have not the slightest doubt he would have been very effective. When the innings concluded an adjournment for luncheon took place, and in the interval a photograph of the eleven was taken by Messrs Peyman and Irvine. CANTERBURY —FIRST INNINGS.
