subject, and a deputation from the resident miners had an interview lately in town with the Superintendent. Since then an intimation has been received that Government will be prepared to withdraw any particular section of land upon which mining operations may be carried on. This concession simply amounts to nothing. The gold is distributed along the whole course of the river, and unless the parties are in a position to keep shifting about from oue point to another it is impossible that they can make anything out of their labors. The ground at present supports about sixty working parties, exclusive of Chinamen. These parties are one and all doing a very fair stroke of work, and the action of the Government is viewed by them with alarm. The Shag Hiveris a first-rate poor man’s diggings. He can set in with a cradle, and make very good wages at the very outset, and some of them who have remained steadily on the ground for a year or two have got into first-rate permanent wont. In jotfie cases expensive mining appliances have been constructed, and these to a certain extent will be rendered useless if the proposed sale be carried out. ihe rumor throughout the locality is that Mr Dil.on Bell, who has a run in the neighborhood, has used his influence with the Government to get the land sold, in order that he may be enabled to extend as well as establish his grazing rights. Mr Bell makes no secret of the fact that he intends to become the purchaser, hut assures the diggers that he will not interfere with their work. The diggers, however, think that it would he preferable if Mr Bell were not to be placed in a position that woull enable him to interfere with them, and we have little doubt but that in this opinion they are merely consulting their own interest.
