OUR OFFICIALS.

To the Editor of the Evening Star

Sir, — 1 beg to state through the columns of your paper a matter that might be the means of putting a check to a system carried on at present amongst some of cur Government officials. I have been Dobbin driving for the present contract on Bell hill; on arriving at the sta> les last Tuesday evening, to my surprise I was told that my services were no longer required. Being a steady man and possessed of all the qualifications necessary for a dobbin driver, 1 should like to know if it is a right state of things that men of my stamp, receive employment from a certain master, that master being quite satisfied with my services but still compelled to discharge me for the sake of giving employment to another man who is well known to be a favorite of a certain Government official.' This letter I write not for the sake of animosity, but to give publicity to a grievance through which many a valuable man suffers. Jamies Russell. Nov, 4, 1869. [We give the above letter insertion as a means of leading to an enquiry on the part of the Government, although we are always reluctant to bring public charges against men who from their peculiar position are debarred from replying. It must be accepted at its worth.— Ed. E.S.]
