RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
This Day. (Before James Fulton, Esq., R.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Susan Philips, an old offender, was fined 40s, or, in default, seven days’ imprisonment. THEFT. Catherine Miller, alias Jessie Crichton, was charged with stealing a shawl, dress, and skirt, the property of a Mrs Elizabeth Marks It appeared from the evidence that the prisoner arrived from Scotland by the Agnes Muir about four months ago, with 1 iters of introduction from her sister to the prosecutrix. On Tuesday last she went to the house of the latter, and si ayed there all night. Mrs Marks having occasion to go out early on Wednesday morning, left the pris mer in the house ; but on her return, about two hours afterwards, she found that she had gone, and the articles above mentioned were missing. Last evening Detective Golder met the prisoner in George street, carrying a bund e. He accosted her, but she refused to give him any information as to whore she got the things in the bundle. After he brought her to the watch-house, she gave her name as Jessie Crichton. and said she got th things from a Mrs Blackwood. Subsequently she expressed her sorrow for having taken them from the prosecutrix, and offered to take them back. She was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment with hard labor. MINOR OFFENCES. John Murphy and John M'Gaffin were charged witn fighting in Jetty street, Murphy was fined 40s, and M'Gaffin 20s.— Edward Gibson was fined 7s and costs for allowing cattle to stray, and William Rae was fined Is and costs for the same offence. Thomas Colquhoun, for allowing a horse to wander, was discharged with a caution.—John Alley w s charged with polluting the waters of a creek, at the Kaikorai. Mr Wilson defended. The defendant, who is a manufacturer <. f neatsfoot oil, uses the water of a creek running into the Kaikorai, for the purposes of his business, the consequence being that the water is rendered unfit for use by the settlers in the neighborhood, and carriers on the road. The ca-e was adjourned for a week to allow the defendant an opportunity of abating the nuisance. INFORMATIONS BY THE INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES. Cornelius Banbury, for allowing four cows to wander, was fined Is a head and costs. John Grant, for a similar offence was fined 20s and costs.—Joshua Eccles was charged with casting impure water on Arthur street. The case was adjourned for a fortnight.— Isaac Stdby, for allowing the chimney of his house to take fire, was fined 10s and costs. —Patrick Shahey, for neglecting to keep his premises clean, was fined 5s .-md costs. — I homas Hughes, for plying for hire off the cabstand, was fined Is and costs. INFORMATIONS BY THE TOWN BELT RANGER. Duncan Cameron for allowing a horse to wander, was line'l 2s and costs ; and the same penalty was imposed on W. Hall for allowing cows to depasture within the town limits.—A charge of a similar nature preferred against Michael Moore was adjourned for a week.
