Drought ix Australia.—A writer in the Sydney Mail, who asserts the periodicity of droughts, makes the following startling statement : —‘‘But the greatest of all the droughts—the one that effects the general prosperity of a country, paralyses trade, suspends speculation, alarms capitalists, and brings ruin to thousands—is the drought of 1868-9. This terrible scourge would appear to have a circle of about thirty years’ duration. It has visited this land thrice since its colonisation, —first in 1806-7, when maize was L 7 a bushel; the second time in 1831-9, when flour was LIOO a ton ; and the third and last time in 1868-9, when nothing but fat cattle rose in value. This < visitation is distinguished from all others of its kind by its severity and duration. The drought of 1838-9 will be known hereafter as the Three Years’ Drought; that of 1868-9 will be known hereafter as the Five Years’ brought. Since the great flood of March, 1864, when the Darling was twenty-five miles wide, and all the low lands in Australia were under water, many creeks and rivers have f-iled to run, owin' to the total absence of x’aiu in their neighborhood since that time. If my theory is right, such another drought as the last will not visit this land for next thirty years. It will then appear about the year 1898-9 ; in fact, a whole generation will have passed away by that time. There will be few living then who have witnessed the kindred drought of 1868-9, and scarcely one in trventy thousand who saw that of 1838-9. Wanted. ANTED known, R.
