Hokitika. — We have been informed t]iat four vacancies will shortly occur in the Westland County Council—Mr Button, one of the members for Hokitika, and Mr Bees, the member for Kanieri, being about to proceed to Auckland. Mr W. H, Harrison, the member for Greymoutb, is, we understand, shortly to depart for Otago ; and Mr Clark, who represents the Waitnea district, is about to retire into private life. If M r Button goes to Auckland, a vacancy will occur m the Mayoralty of Hokitika. —Lyttelton Times. The Maori Trials.— Referring to the trial and conviction of some of the Maori prisoners at Wellington, his Honor Mr Justice Gresson remarked in Chambers that the sentences had been deferred until the sitting of the Court of Appeal, as some difference of opinion existed amongst the Judges of the Colony as to the mode in which judgment should ho pronounced. —Li/ttdton Times, Oct. 3Messrs Spiers and Pond’s restaurant at the Wimbledon Camp covers a space o acres, and contains over 9,000 ft super of framed and glazed work in the facade, over 400 squares of 'flooring, besides roofing and all the internal fittings; a bar 200 ft long, offices, stores, cellars, kitchen, cooking apparatus, and all internal fittings. The whole building is put together in sections of sft, and with bolts and nuts, making the whole portable. This building, together with the whole of the temporary erections in troop stables, forage and commissariat stores, entrance buildings, yost and police offices, canteens, and about four miles of fencing 6 feet bigb, were carried out by Messrs W, Brachcr and Sou in three yreelss two days—a feat in the building trade been equalled.
