INTERPROVIN CIAL NEWS.

The Government are advertising for rimplications from persons willing to undertake the erection of a dry dock in the Nelson harbor. Mr Moorhouso, late Superintendent of Canterbury, is at present in Auckland, where it is stated, lie intends to commence the practice of his profession. Some very good specimens of quartz have been received in Christchurch from the Hit or Miss Company’s claim. The directors are very sanguine ns to the claim turning out well, and a party of men have been despatched to work the reef. The number of births registered in the Colony (including the Chatham Islands) during the year 1868, was 9391, and of deaths, 2662 ; the excess of births over deaths thus being 6729, or at the rate of 283.53 per cent. For Ota,go the figures are :—Births, 2397 ; dea hs, 604 ; excess of births over deaths, 1793, or at the rate of 296.85 per cent. The rate of deaths per 1000 of the population—calculated at the nearest unit—was as follows Nelson, 8; Southland, 9 ; Chatham Islands, 11 ; Auckland and Otago, 12 ; We lington, Hawke’s Bay, Canterbury and West land, 13 ; Taranaki, 14 ; Marlborough, 17; and all New Zealand, 12. A correspondent of the Marlborough Press gives a return of the timber produced at the various mil s at Mahikipawa [Mahakipawa] and the Grove during the 1 st quarter, from which wc learn that Mr Duncan’s mill has produced 456,578 feet ; Dive and Gaby, 446,273 feet; Brownlie (two months), 317,412 feet ; Brown and

Ingles, 284,736 feet ; total, 1,511,990 feet ; valued at L 4.536. Of this quantity, Canterbury takes .157,006 feet ; Otago, 288,000 ; Wellington, including Wanganui, 330,« 0 ; Maribomu i- 221,909 ; Nelson, 180,000; an I Ilo'ia 't Ttiwn, 30,000 feat. The quantity taken !>/ our Province, is no criterion to'eo l>v fo- paat quar era, as the pontoons took 96,838 feet, and Messrs Browhe and Co.’s mill at Katuna, 114,000 feet.
