BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.
(from our own correspondent.)
Wellington, Thursday. The trial of the prisoners confined in the hulks has been commenced. Eight are to be tried at a time ; and they have all pleaded not guilty. Tauroa, the greatest scoundrel of all, has been admitted as Queen’s evidence.. The Manawatu land question lias been finally settled. The decision of the Court completely vindicates Dr Ecathcrston’s conduct in the matter of the purchase. Six thousand acres were by him set apart for non-settlers, and six thousand* two hundred acres have been awarded for the purpose, out of 250,000 acres over which the Natives claimed, and over which their title has been declared to be extinguished.
