The Otago Institute.— At a meeting of the Otago Institute, held in the City Council Chamber last evening, a resolution was affirmed to the following effect'hat the Council request the Governors of the New Zealand Institute to take the necessary steps for the incorporation of the Society with the Institute. 1 ’ This conclusion was arrived at by a meeting composed of only about one-third of the members, in opposition to the urgent request of a considerable number of those present, that the discussion might be adjourned. Art Union. —The drawing at Messrs Bnrton Brothers’ Art Union for original oil and water-color paintings and chromo-litho-graphs, took place tins afternoon, at two o’clock. The attendance w*s large and highly respectable. The following prizes were drawn Mr L’ Ensign, prize for L3O ; Mr Hodgkins, 25 guineas; Mr J. S. Parry, L2l ; Mr G. Smith, 116 16s; Mr Fisher, L 8 Bs. Those enumerated were the principal prizes. There was a great number of smaller value. The proceedings were conducted with the utmost fairness, and gave general satisfaction. Trout. —We are glad to learn from the Bruce Standard, that—“ A fine trout lias been seen in the ponds, near the resides.es of Mr. J. K. Brown. For some time past Mr. Brawn has been doubt f ul of the successful result of the experiment, but from the advanced growth of tbc trout in question, he infers that the flooded and maddy state of the water shortly after the introduction of the young fry has not been utterly destructive, and be yet hopes to fird a great many more in a progressed state. It must be very satisfactory to Mr. Brown to think that his personal labour and expenses are not likely to be thrown away. We regret to know that the contributions for this really public work will be insufficient to cover the actual outlay by Mr. Brown, and wo would suggest that an effort should be made without delay to re-imburse him.” Princess Theatre. —Bulwer’s celebrated play of “Richelieu” was presented last evening to a house filled in every part. Mr Talbot gave us a splendid delineation of the wily and political Cardinal—the lover of his country. Mr Raynor, as the Chevalier de Mauprat, acted well his part. Mr Woolfe as King Louis, Mr Joyce as Father Joseph, Mr Howard as Sieur de Beringher, and Mrs Jackson as Julie, and Miss Gassy Matthews as Marion de Lonne, played their several S-ta in a creditable and effective manner, e entertainment concluded with the laughable farce of “A Regular Fix,” in which Mr Bartlett, as Hugh de Brass, kept the house in a constant roar. This evening Mr Talbot will appear as Sir Giles Overreach, in “A New Way to Pa*' Old Debts.”
