THE LADIES AND THE VOLUNTEERS.

{To the Editor of the EveninqStar. ) Sir, —A week or two ago I saw an announcement in the paper of the intention of the Adjutant to devote the money collected by the ladies of Otago for providing colors for the Volunteers, to a purpose entirely different from the original intention. Now, Sir, I think when it was known that the colors were not allowed, that at least the wishes of the Volunteers should have been ascertained as to how they would like the money invested, I understand the present intention is to spend the money in medallions and string them about the necks of the winners ; a more heathenish proceeding I never heard tell of ; why, in process of time a volunteer may be like a wild Indian or a prize pig, and have to be led about with his medals on. For my part I think the proposal one of the most senseless that has ever been thought of ; besides the money collected will be expended by the time that designs are paid for, and jewellers have had their pickings out of it, then what is to be done for medallions ? Now what I propose would be much more sensible, and that is, to add to the L6O already collected about L4O more and invest it at ten per cent. ; with the interest a LlO cup could be purchased yearly, to be called the “ Ladies’ Cup.” A great interest would be sure to be kept up for such a prize, but I question very much if you could get your volunteers to shoot for medallions, or to wear them afterwards if they did shoot for them. Hoping that others will give their opinion on the matter, I am, &c., A Volunteer’s Sweetheart.
