To the Editor of the Evening Star.
Sir, — In the Times of to-day, Mr Fish attempts to deal with ray plain matter of fact statement, appearing in the Star of Saurday last, as to there having been a sura of money offered to be paid to the Benevolent Asylum for a perusal of tlie Newcastle Piiot, which found its way so mysteriously into Mr Fish’s possession. He says there is a grain of truth, and a groat deal of something else in my >tatement. I leave the public tojudge what foundation there is for this gratuitous untruth. My error, if any, simply consisted in the particular appropriation of the sum offered—which our Mr White in his offer divided into two parts. One portion of the amount was offered as a tribute to Mr Fish’s cupidity ; and the second part of the amount was to enable this worthiest of Councillors to satisfy his cravings for popularity by becoming charitable, not thiough the medium of his own pocket, but through that of Stephen Hutchinson, C.E.
