A STATEMENT ON THE GAS QUESTION.
To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sir—The captain of the barque Laughing Water, from Newcastle, consigned to our firm, brought a journal called, 1 believe, the Newcastle Pilot or Chronicle, containing a. damaging account of Mr A. K. Smith’s management and transactions with the Newcastle Gas Company. Th;s journal has found its way in Mr Henry Smith Fish’s imssession ; and although he was informed that if he would permit usa perusal of this paper, wo would give L 5 5s to the Benevolent Asylum, which, with the Government grant, would be equal to a donation of LIS 15s, he has r<-fused to do so. The only deduction I can arrive at is, that, if the true state of the affair becomes known, the Gas Committee would not dare to throw away L2OO for Mr A. K. Smith’s furture services without some further consideration. — Yours &c.
Stephen Hutchison, Engineer for the Dunedin Gas Works
