The Horses of New South Wales.— A few clays ago a gentleman from the Colony of South' Australia, accompanied by three friends, paid a flying visit to Bathurst, the western metropolis. Beaching Mount Victoria by rail, they were disappointed to find that a two-horse conveyance, previously telegraphed for to he ready, was not available. Host Avery speedily came to the rescue, and offered a horse and bu"gy, for the journey of fifty-two miles. Considering the weight to be carried (45 sto'*e), and the heavy nature of the road, the strangers could imt realise the chance of getting to a speedy end of the journey without inflicting cruelty on any horse. Their scruples were, however, so far overcome by Mr Avery, that a st;irt was effected, and in twelve hours, inclusive of two hours spent in baiting, Bathurst was reached ; the horse (known as “ Honest John”) never being pressed, and fit to proceed twenty miles further. The return journey was commenced the following afternoon, and, giving the good lioi’se a spell of eleven hours, Mount Victoria was reached by noon on the third day, without any pressure or difficulty. We have no doubt other horses could be found to do the same, hut the above facts arc worth recording in the interest of the breed of horses in New South Wales.
