LATEST FROM THE NORTH.

A five occurred at Auckland on the 29th. Three houses were destroyed in Cook street. Mr James Cameron, a printer, was burned to death. Two men belonging to a trading schooner were shot at Eromauga, New Hebrides, by the natives. Three King natives were arrested at Ngaruawahia, having a large quantity of arms and ammunition. They were supposed to be cn route to join Te Kooti. They had four guns, ten boxes of caps, and 24lbs powder. They have stated were they procured it, and the prices paid by them. Their statements are not believed. They have been remanded to Auckland, Several Maoris have passed through Hamilton with suspicious swags.

Advices from Taurauga are to the 26tb. There was a serious riot among the militia garrison at the Gate Pa redoubt; intoxication was the cause. It was quelled by prompt exertions, without loss of life. Colonel Harrington has discharged a whole detachment, officers and all, except a few who exerted themselves to restore order.

We have advices of Te Kooti’s proceedings from Auckland telegrams up to the 28th. He left Te Kuiti on Monday, proceeding towards Mokau with 300 men. He will recruit at Kareo, Mangawanga, and Mokau, in order to raise his force to 600 men. If successful, lie will return and depose

the King, enforce his religion, and attack the Waikato. When Te Kooti left, the King’s forces fired a derisive volley after him. Te Kooti burned the King’s house before leaving. Rewi accompanied him. One hundred Ngatimaniapotos followed Te Kooti yesterday to bring Rewi back. Rewi is supposed to be mad, Reihana proposed to Tawhiao to pursue Te Kooti, and drive him to Taupo, but Tawhiao refused to accede to that course.

The Ngatimaniapoto are determined not to stop their district against Te Kooti.

The gold excitement is breaking out again in Wellington, in reference to the Terawiti reefs. Companies are forming daily. Nothing of consequence has yet been discovered.

The Sturt arrived at Wellington on the 30th ult. The prisoners she brought were 96 in nnmber, all men, the women and children being left in charge of the friendlies at Patea. Though looking somewhat dejected, and for the most part enveloped in blankets in lieu of other clothing, one fails to find in their countenances (witli one or two exceptions) much trace of the ferocity thendeeds have indicated. Most of them are young men, some mere lads—and a few are old and grey. The chief Tauroa, who is respectably dressed in European costume, has a very crestfallen air, and appears to feel his position keenly. Whare Matangi, a noted rebel, is amongst the crowd, as also Te One Kura, recently captured, who has acquired such an unenviable notoriety as the murderer of Mr Broughton. Te One is certainly a most villanous looking rascal. The guard consists of 45 Ngatiporous, under command ol Inspector Penis, The prisoners were placed on board the hulk City of Newcastle.
