Commercial.

Evening Star Office, Monday evening. The total amount of revenue collected at the Customs to-day, was £442 7s 3d.

In the import markets business has been quiet, and no signs of activity have been apparent throughout the day. Breadstuffs, influenced by further advices from California, published this morning, are very depressed, so that even the trifling demand that existed for trade requirements has been brought to a temporary standstill No sales of any description have transpired to-day. Notwithstanding this, we do not see any appearance of giving way in price, and our quotations for best brands of flour must still be retained at Ll3 10s to Ll4. For wheat, however, we cannot quote over fls for best samples. Trifling lots have been sold at a shade beyond, but we cannot give the feeling in the market as over 6s. The demand for oats is very brisk. We hear of the entire shipment of 1,300 bags per Ocean Wave haying been quitted in parcels at 4s 3d to 4s 3ld. Maize is still quoted at 4s 2d; but as supplies are coming forward more freely, buyers are not ao eager to purchase, in the expectation that prices will be easier. The Mary Cummins and the Royal Duke, both from Clarence River with maize, arc reported amongst the arrivals of the

day. The damaged sugar, per Ocean Bride, amounting to 3,100 bags, was offered by public sale this afternoon. A large attendance was attracted, and the auctioneers succeeded in placing the whole at a marked advance on the finer qualities ; for the lower sorts, fully current rates were realised. Teas, though not characterised by much animation, are not quite neglected. A line of common congous, -'0 chests, ex Galatea, was cleared off at I s We understand that the balance of the Gustave’s cargo, about 3,000 packages, will be offered by auction on Thursday. These teas are said to be very fine. Currants are moving off very freely at from Sid to 3Jd, according to quality ; several parcels have been quitted and amongst other sales a line of one hundred barrels is mentioned.. A shipment of_ plaid vestas was sold to arrive, and a small invoice of 1,000 s was taken up at 70s. A consignment of galvanised iron, Scotch, changed hands at L 24 10s. A parcel of 150 three-quarter boxes tens tobacco was disposed of on private terms. In liquids we continue to note sales of Hennessy’s case brandy, in parcels, at 20s fid. A small shipment of O’Brien’s dagger brand of stout was taken up at 9s fid.— Argus, 27th.
