They say that they have " found payable quartz at the Peninsula, 15 miles from Christchurch. Bluff, Monday. The Omeo arrived from Melbourne at 7.30 a. in. with cargo, passengers, and horses, after it fine trip of five days. She left Hobson’s Bay pier at 3 p.m. on the 13th, cleaved the heads at 6.30 p.m. the same day, passed Swan Island lighthouse at 6 p.m. on the 14th, sighted the Alhambra at 8.30 a.m. on the 15th about 100 miles eastward of Banks’ Straits, experienced northerly winds until the evening of the 15th, thence experienced strong winds from the south till sighting Preservation Inlet, sighted the Bluff at 2 p.m. on the 18th, and arrived as above. She brings 26 saloon and 21 steerage passengers, also 350 tons of cargo' for all ports. She leaves for Dunedin at 4 p.m. The Phoebe has just arrived. Melbourne, July ,13. Business is dull. Flour from LI 3 15s to LI4. Wheat wanted at 6s 2d. Maize is in demand at 4s 4d. Oats, 4s 3d. Downer’s kerosene oil is firm at 2s Id. Auction sales of sugar show a slight decline. The Mudgee diamond mine is causing great excitement. There have been fresh finds, and shaves are rising. Kiddy, a farmer at Doleraine, has murdered his wifi*. The sports at the cricket ground last (Saturday were largely attended. Fifteen thousand persons were present. Mr Finley, of Melbourne, won the velocipede race. Mr G. J. Bignell was the winner of the M. C. C. Cup. The Croxtou Park games the same day were a great success. Mr Hobson, of Ballarat, won the by cycle mcc. General Latham, the United States Consul, has been recalled. His successor is Mr David S. Pinel. The Land Bill makes slow progress in committee. Seventeen clauses have been passed. New bye-laws have been published regulating velocipedes in the city boundaries. Pearls have been found in Western Australia. Sydney, July 12. The associated compositors propose to establish an evening paper. Ross Lew ill’s license for Polynesian labor trading has been cancelled. The barque Freetrader from California with breadstuffs has been placed in quarantine. Some hundred pounds have been subscribed here for the released Fenians in Western Australia. The markets are dull. Adelaide, July 12. Th 6 corn market is depressed. News from the Baressa and Aluuuula mines is favorable.
