The Lake District. —The Queenst i¥n correspondent of the Dunstan Times, writing under date the 4th instant, reports as follows :— 11 We have had some very severe weather lately, and while I am writing the snow in many places is covering the ground on the fiats. The Shotover, and the various other streams which feed the lake, as well as the Molyneux asp very low, many of the smaller watercourses being actually "frozen up altogether. lam of opinion, however, that v, e shall have a change to north-w'est winds, which will, in all probability, bring a fiopd, the accumulation of snow in the ranges being very large. Mr Gillies, the member of the Provincial Government deputed to en<(uire?into the goldfields grievauces, has paid us a visit. He left on Friday last for the Dunstan, via Cardrona. Mr Giliics was not much pestered here, there being no land grievance to complain about, we have plenty of land available f r occupation, our difficulty is thp want of people to occupy it, The growth of hops on a small scale has been very successful, and efforts are being made to encourage their growth on a largo one. Messrs Halloustein and Co., with liberality offer 2s Gd per pound for the first five hundred pounds grown in the district. Considering that all the ingredients for making beer can be successfully grown, local enterprise should not hesitate much longer in starting a brewery, or perhaps somebody at Clyde or Cromwell might be inclined to embark in this much needed branch of industry.”
