DEAR SIR, —We. the undersigned ratepayers of the city of Dunedin, respectfully request you to allow yourself to be nominated for the office of Mayor at the approaching election. We are assured from the satisfactory manner in which you have discharged the duties of Git} 7 Councillor, that you will, if elected to the still more important office of Mayor, continue to devote your time and ability to pi oinoie the interests of the city. We are also of opinion that the leisure you n. w mjoy, places you in a position to give that minute attention to public matters which it is difficu.t for any gentleman engaged in butine-s to afford. CN ENTLEMEN, —I accede to your reIT quest with much pleasure, and in doing so wish to state that I leave the result of the election entirely in the hands of the ratepayers. I will not resort to the very questionable practice of paid canvassers, and such like means, to secure my return. It seems to me an insult to the good sense of the electors of this city to, suppose that the influence of a paid agent, who cries up his candidate for so much per day, will affect in the slightest degree the votes of independent citizsns, who must feel, when they are called upon to eLct one of themselves to the imp rtant office of Mayor, that they have a sacred trust to perform, and will choose for that office the candidate that to their mind has most of the necessary qualifications. I am well known both in a private and public capacity, and, as you remark, have now sufficient leisure to devote to the interests of the city—and, if elected, will zealously devote my time and ability in such a manner as ever to retain the confidence and good opinion of my fedow-citi^tns. I a,vp, Gentlemen, Yours truly, R. S. DODS. CHEAP PRINTING. Billheads, Pamphlets, &c. “EVENING STAR” OFFICE,
