THE ATHENÆEUM COMPETITION PLANS.
To the Editor of the Eveninq Star. Sir, —In a paragraph in yesterday’s Otago Daily Times, it is stated that “ the Committee unanimously resolved that the plans marked ‘ Economy’ were the best, &c., conditionally, that the building can be completed for the sum of L 2500. In the meantime, the Committee have postponed opening the envelopes of the other competitors.” Now, Mr Editor, can you inform me why it is that the Committee have not decided on the second best design for the second premium of Llo ? Do they intend to leave the second prize out of the question ? It appears to me likely from what i could gather from their worthy chairman.
In the 13th clause of their “Particulars to Architects,” they state “the cost not to exceed L 2.508, and plans involving a large outlay will be rejected.” In the Isth clause it states, “The competitor sending in the second best design shall receive a prize of L 15.”
Being convinced you are a lover of fair play, by giving this a space in your valuable journal you will oblige Yours truly, A Competitor.
Friday, June 25, 18C9. P.S.—lt is hardly reasonable, when architects are confined to a sum for the completion of the building, for the Committee to object to carry out their own conditions, and to keep the several plans unopened for an indefinite period.
