Execution of Negroes.—Horrible Scene. Four negroes, William Wilson, Frank Hounds, William Wells, and George Bailey, were hanged recently at Princess Anne, Maryland, for the murder of B. F. Johnson and H. Cannon, captain and mate of an oyster sloop, in March, ISGS. Each prisoner confessed his guilt. Rounds and Wells died instantly, Bailey in a few seconds ; Wilson’s neck did not break. He groaned and struggled horribly. He got the rope off his hands and legs, and caught hold of the shroud of Rounds, and then of his own rope, by which he drew himself up on the scaffold again. The gaoler ascended and tightened the noose, and again pushed the man oil’, jerking the rope violently as he fell. The victim continued to struggle for live minutes, some of the crowd yelling, “That’s right, you ought to suiter.” The execution occupied forty-live minutes.
