THE Evening Star. TUESDAY, JUNE 15, 1869.

r pj[iE id iliat hits taken place ill tlio propviekuj o£ the Evening Star lias led to some consequences which render mi apology due to the public, for the very lame manner in which the first number of the enlarged journal was brought out, and the late hour at which it was issued. We will not trouble our readers with details of circumstances respecting led to the change. With those the present proprietor had as little to do as any of the public themselves. The plant and copyright were offered to him and purchased by him in the usual course of business. Unexpectedly, it was found necessary to remove from the premises, and, consequently, everything was disarranged, and for the last few nights the paper has been brought out under circumstances that perhaps are seldom paralleled for difficulty. Thus far we may allude to what has passed, and we are sure that the public will be sufficiently indulgent to excuse the faults that Avere so apparent in every column last evening. These will be carefully avoided for the future, and the most persevering endeaA r ors Avill be used to render the Evening Star worthy the support that we believe Avill be freely given to it. But in addition to the inevitable unpleasantnesses that attend the transfer of neAvspaper property, a fresh one has cropped up Avhich, much as avc dislike explanation, it is absolutely necessary to grapple with. As far as Ave can gather from reports that have reached us, the late proprietor has it in his mind to establish another journal. We know of nothing to prevent this, nor are Ave under any apprehension regarding it. In the conduct of the Independent Ave competed successfully with him, and are not likely to be less successful now. We merely allude to it because we have been told that the late proprietor has Availed upon most of those who have entered into contracts to advertise in the Star for lengthened periods, and slated that the agreements Avere entered into Avith him personally, and that the present proprietor cannot have an interest in them. The folly of such a position is sufficiently apparent Avhen the nature of the contracts is considered. They Avere entered into Avith the then proprietor of the Star for a specified service, tint of inserting advertisements in his paper, the Evening Star. But since he has ceased to have any interest whatever in that journal, he is unable to fulfil his part of the engagement. and the power of its fulfilment is transferred Avith the journal itself. It Avill be very apparent to those Avho have entered into those conk-acts, that the increased circulation of the Evening Star, for which special arrangements have been made, has rendered them more advantageous than at the time the engagements were entered into ; and avc cannot therefore suppose that any who consult their oavu interests Avill feel inclined to withdraAV from them. Acting upon this assumption, Ave have continued to insert them. Although desirous of standing well in the personal esteem of our supporters, avc imagine feAV, through personal friendship only, advertise in a newspaper. They expect, and have a right to a quid pro quo, and this we are prepared fully to give. Our manager will, as early as possible, Avait upon those whose advertisements are current. We have to apologise for this reference to our present position, and trust Ave shall not need fmther to obtrude our special affairs upon public attention.
