THIS DAY. RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT. (Before A. C. Strode, Esq., R.M. STEARIN E. Thomas Shaw (on remand), charged with stealing, on April, 1865, a watch and chain, valued at L4O, the property of George W. Elizabeth Hoar (on remand), was charged with exposing liquors for sale without a license. Mr- Ward appeared for the defendant. From the evidence given by the police, it appeared that they visited the defendant’s store, off Staff orclstreet, at about a quarter to ten on the evening of the 10th inst. ; and on entering the premises, met a Mrs Tierney coming out with a jug of beer; they also found in the shop two kegs of brandy, two dozen of ale and porter, three bottles of gin, one bottle of port wine, and one keg of draught beer, which were stated by the defendant to have been purchased for the purpose of being given to her lodgers. Mr Ward submitted that there was no evidence to show that at the hour named by the police the defendant’s shop was open for the purpose of selling liquor, and he called witnesses to prove that she bad been in the habit of presenting liquor to her lodgers and customers. The Magistrate thought that with regard to the hour named, it was no doubt the best time for shanty keepers to drive a good trade ; and he considered the evidence most conclusive.
