The Evening Star. DUNEDIN, SATURDAY, JAN. 20. 1866.
His Worship the Mayor, as Chief Magistrate of the City, held his second Court at the Corporation offices this morning at 10 o’clock, and disposed of the two charges of drunkenness on the Police sheet by fining each offender 20s and costs, with the usual alternative. The City Corporation are going to work energetically to collect the rates, and in several instances have not respected persons, for we hear that, through the neglect of the parties liable, at least one Bank, and a Club were in possession of the bailiffs this morning. We need hardly add that nothing but procrastination placed those establishments in such a fix, and that the “minions of the law ” speedly received their conge. The “ clerk of the weather ” has, in colonial parlance, “ a down” upon Pic-nics and outdoor amusements, and, in consequence, the Gala and Fancy Fair which was to have taken place to-day in aid of the Otago Benevolent Institution, has been wisely postponed for a week, when it is to be hoped the sky will present a more cheerful appearance. We see, by an announcement in another column, that the Musical Profession intend to pay respect to the remains of the late SergeantMajor Grennan, by play ing the “ Bead March in Saul ” at his Funeral on Monday. Those who have not seen the “ Sea of Ice” will not have an opportunity after this evening, as it is announced to be played for the last time. Miss Grace Egerton will present for the first time, this evening, her second entertainment, entitled, “ Latest Intelligence from Abroad and at Home.” Wherever it has been played, report has spoken highly of its performauce.
Lady Don was to leave Sydney on the 15th inst., and will arrive here by the Otago on the 26th instant.
