The Lovers’ Lear. —There is an American story of a young lady who, being intensely loved bv five young men, was advised to “jump overboard, and marry the man wdio jumped in after her.” Accordingly, the next morning the five lovers being on deck, and looking very devoutly at the young lady, she plunged into the sea head foremost. Four of the lovers immediately jumped in after her. When the young lady and four lovers were out again, she says to the captain, ‘ ‘ What am I to do with them now they are so wet ?” “ Take the dry one.' I '' And the young lady did, and married him. A Polite Rebuke. —Charles Mathews, seated on a coachbox on a frosty day waiting anxiously for the driver, said to him when at length he appeared—“ Why I declare, if you stand here much longer, Mr Coachman, your horses will lie like Captain Parry’s ships.” “How’s that sir?” W1 \y,.frozen to the poles. ”
The shooting for the return of two. representitives for No. 1 District to 'fire ■at Wellington for the Colonial prizes took place at the Kaikorai Butts to-day, and resulted as follows
The tie between Corporal Christie, East Taieri, and Gunner, Fisher, Artillery, for fourth prize of No. 1 District was shot off at 500 yards, and won by Gunner Fisher.
